The Winner: Caramel Apple Recipe

Awhile back I posted my search to find the perfect caramel apple recipe.  This is one of my favorite treats.  After some great suggestions, some finds of my own, and a few tests later, I have found the perfect recipe (at least in my opinion)!  It's easy, and oh so delicious.  This would make for a perfect Thanksgiving treat, neighbor gifts for the holidays, or just for fun.

Enjoy!

Caramel Apples

Ingredients:
1 cube butter
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup karo syrup
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp. vanilla

8-10 Granny Smith apples, medium sized
Small dowels or popsicle sticks
*candy thermometer

Method:

In a medium pot, melt over medium heat the butter, brown sugar and karo syrup until bubbly.  Add the can of milk.  Cook to a soft ball stage (230 degrees) stirring constantly (this temperature is key).  The caramel will thicken and darken in color.  Remove from heat and add vanilla.  Let cool for a few minutes.

Dip apple in caramel, then set on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper.  Allow to cool (or refrigerate). For gourmet apples, dip into white chocolate and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar or drizzle with milk chocolate after caramel has cooled.  Or dip in caramel then roll in your favorite candy or nuts (snickers, oreos, butterfinger, pecans, etc.).
